Studio Four Design Partners with Faith Promise Church to Support Growth

Leading Knoxville-based architecture firm, Studio Four Design, partners with Faith Promise Church to support rapid growth.

Studio Four Design has enjoyed numerous opportunities in its history to work with many churches to complete expansion projects, renovations, and new builds. One of those churches, Faith Promise Church, has partnered with Studio Four Design in multiple projects to accommodate its remarkable growth and to accomplish the opening of new campuses in East Tennessee. Aaron Goin, Executive Pastor at Faith Promise, described their decision to choose Studio Four Design. “The thing that stood out to us was the designs by Studio Four displayed an in-depth understanding of ministry and what would work best for us. We wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time providing context and obstacles for ministry.”

The leadership of Faith Promise Church, centrally based in Knoxville, TN, is no stranger to church expansion. After their humble beginning in 1995 in a rented hotel venue in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the growing numbers of attendees and young families quickly spurred on the need for a larger, permanent space. After acquiring property located in Hardin Valley in 2000 and constructing its first permanent building, the Faith Promise church family continued to see rapid development and increasing crowds in attendance each week.

With a vision to “win the world by equipping Christ followers to win their world starting with 1% of the state of Tennessee”, the pastoral staff and leadership team didn’t stop there. They moved ahead with their long-term strategy to reach more people in the greater Knoxville and East Tennessee area with a precise focus. Since the construction of the original building, Faith Promise Church has expanded to eleven locations across East Tennessee, including three in Knox County, with additional church homes in Blount County, Anderson County, and Bristol.

As with many church plants, the new campus locations were found in a variety of settings when they were first acquired, including rented and purchased space, previous retail environments, and more. With a desire to utilize each location to its fullest potential to house the growing church, each project required a purposeful layout and design. Faith Promise Church sought the help of the Studio Four Design team to help implement a functional plan yet maintain cohesive branding throughout so that visitors and attendees would easily recognize the Faith Promise presence regardless of the campus. Mr. Goin reflected, “…we have a lot of ideas about potential campuses or spaces, but it is always so hard to know the right direction to go. Studio Four always provides us with multiple options to consider with cost impacts that help us make the best possible decision.” To date, Studio Four Design has partnered together on the Faith Promise campuses in Anderson County, Farragut, and Bristol, in addition to master planning and renovation work at the original Pellissippi Parkway location.

Modern church design requires careful thought and elements that are crucial to the success, safety, and effectiveness of the ministry activities that happen during on-site gatherings. Elements like children’s ministry space, security, traffic flow, parking, quality audiovisual equipment, and acoustics all contribute to the visitor experience. At the newest Faith Promise location in Bristol, Tennessee, Studio Four Design helped transform a former retail space into a welcoming, functional, secure, and quality space consistent with the visual look that the church has established. “We had always done traditional signage, but they sent us a design that was fresh and beautiful but still aligned with our brand. It is honestly our favorite feature on any exterior of all of our campuses,” described Mr. Goin.

As any church leader would agree, the balance of church growth and expansion, while responsibly managing budgetary needs, is a delicate balance. The exciting growth experienced by churches can quickly create a lack of space to accommodate current members and regular attendees while still comfortably offering room for visitors. With many church plants beginning in rented, temporary spaces, the decision of building or redesign a space for permanent use can be a daunting prospect.

Studio Four Design has extensive project experience working with churches and is privileged to work with staff from the initial phases of master planning to the finished space where the ministry can continue to grow and flourish.

Our Core Values: Go Beyond

The values that an organization prioritizes will shape how they interact, whether with each other, their clients, or the community. The first of our four Core Values at Studio Four Design is the driving force behind everything we do: Go Beyond.

Excellence requires dedication and persistence. Consider the world’s greatest champions: no one who ever achieves success and accomplishes exceptional results would tell you they’ve done it without challenges, because we live in an imperfect world.

At Studio Four Design, our first of four Core Values is “Go Beyond.” Team members are challenged to ask the question, “Am I exceeding the expectations of our clients and our company? Am I demonstrating excellence and achieving exceptional results?”

What does it take to exceed expectations? When our team begins a project with a new client, we evaluate their needs, identify their problems, and develop a plan that will accomplish what they need to propel their mission forward for the future. Sometimes that is easily achieved, and sometimes projects present a variety of challenges. Teamwork, collaboration, and good communication between our staff and the project team are critical components to successfully crossing the finish line.

Our goal in every project is to provide clients with an excellent experience from start to finish. With careful attention to detail and purposeful planning, we can achieve exceptional results. We want each of our clients to feel a high level of satisfaction at the time of completion, knowing that their project met and surpassed their greatest expectations!

“In playing ball, and in life, a person occasionally gets the opportunity to do something great. When that time comes, only two things matter—being prepared to seize the moment and having the courage to take your best swing.” – Hank Aaron

Studio Four Design Announces Opening of Voodoo Brewing Co. in Knoxville, TN

Leading Knoxville-based architecture firm announces successful completion and opening of Knoxville’s newest brewery, Voodoo Brewing Co.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – December 20, 2022 – Studio Four Design is excited to announce the successful completion and grand opening of Knoxville’s newest brewery, Voodoo Brewing Co., located in West Knoxville.

Voodoo Brewing Co. held its grand opening on December 17, 2022, in a well-attended event that offered an exciting community introduction to the new venue. Located in a former, more traditionally styled restaurant, Studio Four Design was tasked with redesigning the space to reflect the Voodoo Brewing Co. branding and the owners’ vision and unique personalities. Along with the brand’s already established color scheme, the owners were presented with the freedom to implement existing themes along with quirky graphical elements to create a one-of-a-kind space. A creative and colorful mural includes the Knoxville skyline giving a nod to the new East Tennessee location.

With the clients’ desire to reuse existing elements of the original space, Studio Four Design helped find opportunities to repurpose and integrate pieces like the shelving that was reused as signage, the original wainscoting, and the existing concrete floors. Family and friends got involved in the customization of the space by repainting doors that were procured for the new design, which are now incorporated into the décor hanging above the bar and along the wall.

A new, fully furnished commercial kitchen with modern equipment offers an efficient environment in which the staff can work as they serve customers. Because patrons have a view into the kitchen as they pick up their orders, it was critical to the owners that the space be clean, fresh, and visually appealing. An emphasis on function and layout was critical to making the most of the space and easily accommodating customers. Working closely with the owners and franchise, the design team identified a unique solution for the location of the bar, best utilizing the reimagined space to emphasize direction and provide an efficient and seamless traffic flow.

The brewery offers a European beer hall style of operation, with food and drink available, including long community tables and standard dining tables. The style is designed to create a casual, fun, community atmosphere that fosters interaction between patrons in addition to seating areas for smaller groups if desired.

The Studio Four Design team enjoyed the opportunity to work with these motivated entrepreneurs and the opportunity to delve into this creatively driven project. Designer, Vallie Noles, commented, “These were amazing clients and so proactive. They were hands-on the entire time but very trusting of our team.”

Studio Four Design Provides Design for New Kern’s Bakery Food Hall Tenants

Leading Knoxville-based architecture firm works with tenants in preparation for opening of new food hall in South Knoxville.

Storefront for Captain Muchachos

Pictured is the rendering of the uniquely designed stall for Captain Muchachos that will be housed in the new food hall designed by Studio Four Design.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – November 3, 2022 – Studio Four Design is excited to play an integral role in the development and completion of the new Kern’s Bakery Food Hall, scheduled for opening in June 2023. The historic Knoxville landmark has been reimagined and the building shell designed by Johnson Architecture. Studio Four Design has been chosen by many of the new vendors to create unique, branded stalls for individual businesses to represent their food and product offerings. The newly redesigned facility is one that the owners envision as a “vibrant destination”, where visitors can come for not only a meal and shopping, but find a place of connection with their community, a convenient workspace, or a gathering space for groups.

Located in the New South Knoxville Waterfront District, the new Kern’s Bakery Food Hall will combine the historic and distinctive art deco elements found in the original 1931 building design with new, modern, customized details representative of each vendor. The building will house a 20-merchant food hall including full-service restaurants and unique vendors, with abundant seating and workspace located throughout. A spacious outdoor gathering and entertainment area, two rooftop patios, a dog park, and other amenities will offer space for visitors to linger and enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment.  With its close proximity to Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, the downtown area, and the University of Tennessee, visitors will enjoy the easily accessible location with free onsite parking, free high-speed internet, and a nearby municipal deck connected with a planned pedestrian bridge.

Using an individualized approach, Studio Four Design is providing a customized focus on each vendor, their needs, and visions for their spaces. The defined, limited stall space means that every decision is purposeful and critical to the success of the design. As Architectural Designer Rose Gowder described, the effort is on “maximizing opportunity in each space for things like signage and inch-by-inch detail.” Whether clients desire extra prep space or want to incorporate a creative social media wall, each design is uniquely tailored to the business owner. Working with a variety of vendors, like Captain Muchachos, Hey Bear Café, Won Kitchen, and Irvey’s Ice Cream, Studio Four Design is enjoying the distinctive design process for each business to help them maximize their potential in the new location.

The Kern’s Bakery Food Hall presents the type of project that Studio Four Design is particularly passionate about – helping small business owners who have invested their resources into a dream and helping bring that to reality. The opportunity to build relationships with clients and their families is a uniquely rewarding process and privilege for the Studio Four Design team.

About Kern’s Bakery Food Hall

The new Kern’s Bakery Food Hall, scheduled to open in June 2023, is located in the historic Kern’s Bakery facility. Johnson Architecture developed the renovation design to transform the old facility into a newly designed, modern space to accommodate a variety of dining and specialty vendors.
