KNOXVILLE, Tenn. March 21, 2017 – Wieniewitz Financial, a Knoxville-based financial advisory firm, is expanding to a new office at 1606 Schaeffer Road, Suite 100, off of Pellissippi Parkway and Lovell Road, designed by top local architecture and design firm Studio Four Design.

The new 7,000 square foot office building, built by Stethen-Smith Construction, is entirely owned by Wieniewitz Financial, with the firm’s offices taking up four of the six office bays.

“Visibility and a need for additional space are why we decided to make the move,” said Trae Wieniewitz, president and owner of Wieniewitz Financial. “We were also able to work out a great deal on the real estate with the help of Roger Moore, who eventually connected us with Studio Four Design.”

Studio Four Design created the architectural drawings for the building and also designed the interior of the space.

“I can tell you what I want, but I don’t know what’s reasonable to expect to stay within budget,” said Wieniewitz. “Studio Four’s project manager, Jacene Phillips, did an excellent job of keeping me in the loop and a part of the process, without overcomplicating the decisions. And Jenna Wise, Studio Four’s interior designer, was able to take our photos and suggestions and help us achieve the look and feel we wanted to have when clients come to our office. All in all, it was a great experience. They kept a good line of communication with everyone and helped manage the project so I could focus on my business.”

Studio Four Design - Wieniewitz Financial - InteriorIn addition to the office space, Wieniewitz Financial will also have a group education and training center for catered lunch and learns, breakfast seminars, and outside group meetings, as well as a state of the art fitness center for Wieniewitz Financial employees to round off their corporate wellness program.

“Trae likes people to feel comfortable in his office,” said Stacy Cox, president of Studio Four Design. “So while this was a commercial project, it’s got a residential feel with a lot of great textures. There’s also a beautiful, dramatic tile feature wall in his lobby that will have signage on it. It will make quite the impression when people first walk in.”

Finding a Design you can love

The design teams at Knoxville-based Studio Four Design have worked by our mantra of Design Matters for clients in a number of industries and one of the most common themes that we have found in our experience is the importance of finding a design that you can love. With today being Valentine’s Day, love can mean a number of different things to different people, but when you are creating a space for your retail or restaurant business, having a design that you love can mean all of the difference in the world.

While some franchises have few restrictions on what can be done for a new locations, others have more stringent demands on what can and can’t be done for a franchise location. Delivering architectural designs that meet client expectations can be a lengthy and involved process at times. The needs and requirements of a client can occasionally be in juxtaposition with architectural requirements due to varying complications, including site selection, local zoning requirements, budgets and a host of other factors. Our architects and interior designers work closely with our clients to help them understand the parameters of what can be created within these constraints to find a common ground to create what the client is looking for.

The prevailing thought for our team can be summed up by the following quote:

“Many can hear, fewer listen and only a handful can effectively execute what was said to begin with.”

If you have worked with an architect or architectural firm in the past and have felt as if they were not truly listening to you, understanding the characteristics of a good listener can help you better determine if they are following your vision or their own. For a designer to be a good listener, they must:

Ask good questions. If your architect listens to your vision and doesn’t offer questions or asks for clarification of your points, the likely conclusion is that they are not truly listening to what you have to say about your project. A good architect has done their homework in advance of your initial consultation and knows the right questions to ask about the problem you need to solve.  They will dive in and probe for deeper understanding of what you are hoping to accomplish.

Be focused and engaged. A good architect will be engaged in conversations and focused on the ideas and concepts that you are presenting. If your architect is distracted by other tasks at hand or is automatically making too many references to similar projects that they can adapt for your solution, the likelihood of you getting something original is low and being unhappy with the design is high.

Document and summarize discussions: As you are explaining your hopes and desires for the project that you are hoping to create with an architect, the lack of note-taking may be a sign that your architect is not fully engaged with your project. An architect that is taking notes, interjecting questions for clarification at the appropriate time and who summarizes your discussion at the end and then follows that up in writing is more likely to understand the goals for your project.

Clarify, not assume: In the same way that a good architect will be taking notes to understand your salient points in regards to your design ideas, a good architect will ask for clarification instead of making an assumption on what hoping to accomplish. Time and money can be wasted in the design process if your architect assumes that your design will need to incorporate some elements that may need to be eliminated or revised due to a lack of understanding.

Present alternatives: Sometimes, there are things a client requests that are not always achievable or practical for a variety of reasons. An architect that is listening to you and engaging in the process will offer creative alternative solutions for consideration that can be a remedy to a potential issue that may not have occurred to you.  Or after evaluating and considering everything they have heard from you they may simply pose another way of creatively solving the problem that you may not have considered. An architect that is not listening to you may gloss over these potential problems or present only one option incorporating more of their own ideas, instead of presenting a solution to you that offers the best potential for a win-win.

There are many designers who take the position that their ideas are what’s best for the situation regardless of how well they respond to what the client has requested. The 2016 Knox Heritage “Fantastic Fifteen” Preservation Award winning Patricia Nash Designs corporate headquarters and flagship showroom, designed by Studio Four Design in collaboration with Jeffrey and Patricia Nash.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. November 17, 2016 – Studio Four Design, a top architecture and design firm based in Knoxville, Tennessee that specializes in retail design, has won a 2016 Knox Heritage “Fantastic Fifteen” Award for their collaborative design efforts with Jeffrey and Patricia Nash for the preservation rehabilitation of the Patricia Nash Designs corporate headquarters and flagship showroom at 1132 North 6th Avenue in downtown Knoxville.

The award, which is given annually to 15 construction, design and rehabilitation projects within Knox County that have contributed significantly toward a preservation effort, was presented at the Knox Heritage Annual Meeting and Preservation Awards in early November.

“This award was a great honor for us,” said Greg Terry, principal and design director at Studio Four Design. “We originally nominated Jeffrey and Patricia for the award, and didn’t imagine we were going to be included. Jeffrey has done so much for this community over the years restoring unique, historic structures all over Knoxville. This building is no different, and we are honored that we were able to collaborate with them on the interior design of the building.”

Originally built in 1928, the building was used as a manufacturing facility and warehouse for various woodworking companies and sat empty for about 12 years before it was purchased by Nash in 2015.

“Originally I wanted to renovate the building and turn it into four leasable units,” said Jeffrey Nash, owner of The Courtland Group. “Patricia and I talked about using two of the units for corporate offices, distribution and outlet stores for her business, but once we started doing space planning on those two bays, everyone started to realize really quickly that what we build out right now may work for the next six months, but not for the next six years. That’s when it dawned on us that the whole building was perfect for the future of the Patricia Nash brand.”

From there, Jeffrey, Patricia and Studio Four Design worked to blend the Patricia Nash brand with the character of the historic building that features exposed wood decking and steel windows.

“Patricia’s designs are high end and very artisan,” said Terry. “The challenge we had was taking all of the best things about her eclectic and rich look and feel and incorporating that into an old manufacturing warehouse. Our lead interior designer on the project, Jenna Wise, and interior designer Katie Schulz, worked closely with Patricia and the team to create a cohesive brand image. Jeffrey’s construction team also did an amazing job of cleaning up the building shell, which gave the design team a lot of nice features to work with including an atrium in the center of the building.”

The Nash’s incorporated several custom features including workstations from Heuristic Workshop, and chandeliers and a handrail in the atrium stairs created by a local metal fabricator Preston Farabow.

“I’m so pleased with the way the building came together,” said Patricia Nash, CEO and president of Patricia Nash Designs. “It’s a wonderful representation of who and where we are. It pays homage to the industrial history of the building while fitting in perfectly with our brand.”
